Melbourne, Australia – 15 May 2025
The Country Fire Authority (CFA) of Victoria has reinforced its commitment to delivering advanced training capabilities with an expanded rollout of immersive learning systems from FLAIM Systems. Building on its initial adoption of the technology in 2020, CFA has now upgraded to FLAIM’s latest generation of immersive learning systems to further support their training portfolio across Victoria’s 1,200 volunteer brigades.
As part of this rollout, CFA increased their 2020 investment in FLAIM procuring 10 FLAIM Trainer systems and 5 Incident Command Modules to deliver team-based training to their volunteers across the state with plan to deploy them for both training and assessment.
“We are pleased to increase our investment in FLAIM’s Trainer systems …… this new generation is easier to set-up and operate” said Rohan Luke, Deputy Chief Officer - Operational Doctrine and Training at CFA.
“The key difference we’ll see in the field over time is that whilst skills maintenance is a fantastic opportunity for VR, we’re looking to move VR to course delivery and assessment. There will be several courses that, instead of having to travel to a training centre or do hot fire training, we believe we can meet our RTO requirements by offering some assessments through VR.”
CFA is primarily using the Trainer system to support skills maintenance at the brigade level, with the new rollout offering an opportunity for both upskilling experienced users and introducing new members to immersive training. The system’s flexible design allows trainers to deliver fire training at scale, while minimising travel and logistical demands—particularly relevant for members in remote regions.
The second-phase rollout will focus on expanding training modules for rural-urban interface, asset protection, and burn-over scenarios, aligning with the organisation’s risk priorities across Victoria. CFA is also integrating these modules into their Victorian Emergency Management Training Centre (VEMTC) facilities, ensuring that immersive VR training complements existing live-fire training exercises.
As part of their future training direction, CFA is now exploring VR-based assessment pathways, with plans to upgrade select courses, such as suppression courses, enabling greater accessibility and reducing the need for firefighters to travel long distances for assessments.
“FLAIM is honoured to see CFA further commit to immersive training and invest in the future of firefighter education,” said Simon Miller, Managing Director, FLAIM Systems. “Our mission is to prepare people to respond to hazards and emergencies safely and confidently, and this deployment strengthens CFA’s ability to deliver scalable, high-impact training across its volunteer network.”
FLAIM Systems extends its sincere thanks to Amanda Norris, Rohan Luke, Nicol Levi and the broader CFA team for their leadership in advancing training innovation and building operational capability for the future.
