Raising awareness of firefighter cancer risks

BlogJanuary 24th, 2025

Every day firefighters put their lives at risk to keep our communities safer. However, behind their bravery comes the risk of cancer caused by prolonged exposure to hazardous fumes.

January is Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month, a time to reflect and talk about the challenges that firefighters face and how we can better safeguard their health and well-being.

Why firefighters face heightened cancer risks

Firefighters are constantly exposed to dangerous chemicals, carcinogens, and smoke during their duties. Despite developments in protective gear, these risks persist, with cancer being the top cause of firefighter death across many nations.

The risks do not end once the fire is out. Rather, contaminated equipment, clothing, and even fire stations can contribute to prolonged exposure to hazardous material, which highlights the need for strict decontamination protocols.

Examples of decontamination protocols include:

Thorough cleaning of clothing, equipment, and fire stations to prevent exposure to hazardous materials

Regular health screenings for early exposure of any occupational malignancies and encouraging firefighters and station workers to attend regular medical checkups

Utilise technology to minimise exposure during training, ensuring that firefighters can practice skills and situational awareness in a safe and controlled environment

It starts with awareness

FLAIM is committed to supporting firefighters with tools and training that prioritise safety, skill development, and the wellbeing of firefighters. Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month reminds us that safeguarding those who defend us is a shared responsibility.
